45 Death of Mrs. Arbuckle
Pioneer County Settler

Albina Arbuckle, a pioneer resident of Le Sueur County, passed to her great reward in the early morning hours of November 11, 1932. She had been patiently suffering from a fracture hip and complications for the eight days preceding her death. Her death though inevitable, came as a shock to her loved ones and friends.

Albina Butler Arbuckle was born in Jennings County, Indiana, December 16, 1843. She was one of the nine children born of the union of Keziah and Sidney Butler. Of these children six lived to a rip old age. Two brothers, serving as soldiers in the Civil War were killed in action. The other sister died in her youth. Their mother, Keziah Butler, a woman of great vitality, lived to be 97 years of age.

As a girl, with her brothers, sisters and other childhood friends she attended the county school, taught by her father, Sidney Butler. Instead of doing as her other sisters and attending the Seminary to be prepared for teaching, she chose to marry a neighbor boy, Samuel Sidney Arbuckle at the age of seventeen. As a young bride of nineteen she came with her husband to make her home in Minnesota in the year of 1863. Leaving their Indiana home and relatives, they came by boat up the Mississippi river as far as Hastings, Minnesota. From there they took a stage coach to Dundas, near Northfield. For several years they made their home in this small community, Samuel being engaged work in the only flour mill for a radius of 50 miles. Taking with them their two small children, William and Alfreda, they moved to Le Sueur County, where they took a homestead. With great integrity, perseverance, hard work, and with much faith in their God and each year they strove on year after year, building up a happy home. Together they lived through their hardships and their joys until Mr. Arbuckle was taken away in the year 1917.

To them nine children were born, four of whom are left to carry on the living of fine philosophy, instilled by their parents. They are: Mrs. Jake Haga, of Minot, North Dakota, William of Los Angeles, Sidney of Greenbank, Washington, and Nelson of Sharon Township. The five children who preceded both their father and mother to their Heavenly home were Alfreda, Blanche, Grace, Stella and Phinias. Besides the four surviving children, there are eight grandchildren, and sixteen great grand children, and an only sister, Mrs. Melissa Buckles of Garden City, Minnesota.

Grandma Arbuckle, was a splendid example of loyalty to her family, friends, and God. At the age of thirteen she confessed her faith and love for her God by uniting with the Baptist church. After coming to Minnesota she joined the Christ Church of Le Sueur County by transferring her membership from the Baptist church.

Grandma Arbuckle even until her death made many people happy and inspired by her cheerful heart and her smiling face. She cared not for praise or fame but the memory of her courage and loving kindness will long linger in the hearts of all who knew and loved her, helping to make them living examples of her teaching. Her faith in God made her suffering and the anguish of her loved ones more easy to bear. Always was she giving of her courage and love, never demanding or asking at any time. She died as she lived in the trust of the Almighty Father.

Funeral services were conducted from the family home in Sharon and from the Christian church in Cleveland, The Rev. Poll officiating. At the home, Bethel Rogers and Mrs. Poll sang, “I Need Thee Every Hour,” a favorite hymn of Grandma Arbuckle. During the church services the quartet sang, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “At the End of the Way”. Miss Laura VonLehe and Mrs. Willis Hoyt sang “Whispering Hope.” The text for the sermon was read from Grandma Arbuckle’s old family Bible. Interment was in the little Sharon Cemetery. Pallbearers were Messrs. Fred Ziebarth, William Barringer, Ora Randall, William Ziebarth, Edwin Lloyd and Benjamin Evans.

Those attending the funeral from out of town were: Mrs. Jake Haga, of Minot, North Dakota, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Louden of Minneapolis, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Ely of Wyoming, Minnesota, Mrs. Millard Sapp and Mrs. Ella Thompson of Hopkins, Minnesota, Miss Adele Arbuckle of Renville, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Beer and family of Le Center, Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Ely and family of Cleveland, Mr. and Mrs. Aran Buckles and Chauncey Buckles of Garden City, Mr. and Mrs. Winifred Buckles lf Lake Crystal, Mr. and Mrs. William Layton of St. Peter, and Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Riese, Mrs. Percy Randall and Mrs. Riese Sr, of Eagle Lake.
